Maryellen's Story
...

In 1997 I enrolled at Northwest Missouri State University to earn a Master's Degree in Administration of Physical Education, Health, Recreation and Dance. I was fortunate, having been awarded a Graduate Assistantship to study and work there.

Part of my work responsibilities as the Intramural Coordinator was to order t-shirts and polo shirts for the incoming staff and students. It was a crash course in learning about decorating garments. Little did I know how invaluable this experience would become in the future!

One year later I returned to Bermuda and resumed my role as a Physical Education teacher at Warwick Academy. I began playing soccer for a local club - I've also been an active athlete -- and thought about embroidering my tracksuit with my team's name. When I searched on the Internet for a small sewing/embroidery machine, I discovered an entire business world revolved around embroidered apparel!

The more I explored the more I dreamed about purchasing one of the mammoth decorating machines I read about and starting my own business.

I shared my research with a friend and within one week she called me and told me there was an embroidery machine listed for sale in the newspapers. I quickly dismissed it, convinced that it was a small sewing machine - not the commercial quality I now wanted.

What is for you won't go past you. Two weeks later the same ad appeared in the paper and this time I quickly called the number. A very nice lady told me I was the second person who had called about the machine and that if the first caller didn't want to purchase the machine, I would have the option to buy it.

I showed up 10 minutes early for my appointment to view the machine. The first viewer was leaving the building mumbling that the machine was "too big." I began to get excited. Could it possibly be?

I was welcomed at the door and led to the machine. I could not believe my eyes: this was the same make and model of the machine I had identified in my Internet research!

Getting Business Off The Ground

In June 1998 I established Sew What Embroidery -- a small garment decorating business, which began to grow quickly. Disillusioned with teaching I saw this as an opportunity to make own path so in July 2000 I resigned from teaching, changed the business name to Atlantic Stitches and we were in business. I had jumped off the proverbial cliff and hoped that the parachute opened before I hit the ground.

Keeping the Business Going and Growing

Since our start in 1998 I have been committed to professional development I attend at least two promotional product conferences a year. At these conferences I attend sessions which focus on garment development and changes, what works for specific markets and how best to care for the garments.

My development is not just limited to professional conferences, Maryellen is often off the island attending the personal development courses such as PhotoReading, Spring Forest Qigong, and many other spiritual retreats and conferences. I will share my personal journey and insights in our Blog which you can sign up to receive.

I realized early that to be more effective and efficient I could not do everything by myself. So I have  team of people who work with me to "make it all happen"
